You'll meet our team, we'll explain what happens next and answer any questions you might have. Then all that's left to do is go and start this safari trip of a lifetime together.

You won't spend long in Kigali long before you realise why Rwanda is known as the Land of 1000 Hills. Like the rest of this fertile and well-watered country, the capital stands on an attractive landscape of slopes, valleys and viewpoints. Kigali also boasts a modern business district, a lively Afro-fusion fashion and craft scene, some great restaurants, and a justified reputation as Africa’s greenest and cleanest city.

You’ll stay at the historic Hotel des Mille Collines, which was established in 1973 and sprang to international attention as a refuge during the genocide (documented in the movie Hotel Rwanda). One of the most prestigious hotels in Kigali, it boasts a very central location, though you wouldn't think so sitting in the tranquil gardens, which incorporate a large swimming pool and a gigantic fig tree that attracts plenty of bird activity when it's in fruit.

Day 2

Akagera National Park

You'll be startled by the biodiversity protected within Akagera National Park. Following extensive reintroductions, this uncrowded safari destination is home to all the Big Five, namely elephant, buffalo, black rhino, lion and leopard. Plenty of other wildlife thrives in Akagera’s scenic wooded savannah, hilly grassland, open lakes and marshy wetlands. On dry land, look out for giraffe, zebra, warthog, baboon and 10 species of antelope, from the bull-sized eland to the dainty duiker. Hippos and crocs are common in wetland habitats, which also support the secretive sitatunga antelope and the bizarre shoebill, the most eagerly sought of 550 listed bird species.

Volcanoes National Park

The spectacular Virunga Mountains are the setting for Volcanoes National Park. This is Africa's sixth highest mountain range – the tallest volcano, Karisimbi, rises to 4,507m – and one of its most biodiverse. The park's most celebrated inhabitant is the mountain gorilla, which weighs up to 200kg and shares over 95% of its genes with humans. Other wildlife includes the endangered golden monkey, the elusive elephant and buffalo whose spoor are often seen on forest trails, and 180 bird species. You cannot enter this ecologically fragile park by car and no accommodation lies within its boundaries; exploration is limited to guided walking excursions such as gorilla tracking and volcano hikes.

Nyungwe National Park

However you approach Nyungwe National Park, the transition from a rural Rwandan landscape of terraced hills and tea plantations to the atmospheric depths of East Africa's largest montane rainforest is sensational. No less remarkable is Nyungwe’s biodiversity, which includes 1,050 plant, 85 mammal, 310 bird, 38 reptile, 32 amphibian and 120 butterfly species. Primate viewing is exceptional, with 13 species recorded, most notably chimpanzee. Nyungwe is also Rwanda’s most important destination for dedicated birdwatchers, thanks to the presence of 27 Albertine Rift native birds, but even casual visitors will do a double take when they see a great blue turaco flap past like a brightly colored turkey.
